The Britain’s Oldest Bride
May 12, 2008
A 94-year-old woman has become the oldest bride among all the brides this splendid island has ever had. The hero of the occasion is Bess Atkins who wed Winston Barraclough, 86 at St. Nicholas Church.
The celebration took place at the same location as her first wedding in 1939. “It was very lovely to be married in the same church. When I walked up the aisle it brought back a lot of happy memories”, said Atkins. The proposal came in January on New Year’s Day.
She thought it was some medical problem and feared the worst. But he said: “Will you be my wife, please. I would love to marry you.” The answer came immediately and it was “Yes, that would be lovely!”
This awesome couple met three years ago. Barraclough was a driver for a local hospital.
He picked Atkins up and stopped to buy her a box of chocolates during the 30-minute drive. The gesture was very delicate. And the proposal, too!
